ISTM produces the Travel Medicine Review and Update Course each year. The 2022 Virtual Course date is 3-4 February 2022. Due to COVID-19 outbreak and greater accessibility to the course worldwide, the ISTM Executive Board has decided to change the format for the Course to a virtual format. The course agenda and presentations will remain similar, providing a thorough update and review of the Body of Knowledge for the practice of travel medicine.

Course Description

The Travel Medicine Review and Update Course is designed to review the ISTM Body of Knowledge for the Practice of Travel Medicine and to highlight recent developments in Travel Medicine. The curriculum will cover topics relevant to physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals who provide medical care and advice to travellers, expatriates, and migrants.

Sessions offered will include principles of immune response, risk assessment, and a travel vaccine overview. The expert faculty will present topics including adventure travel, bites and envenomation, cases, food and water exposures, ill returning travellers, risk assessment, malaria, special travellers, vaccines, and vectors. The care of special groups such as pregnant women, pediatric travellers, immigrants, VFR travellers, diabetics, and immunocompromised hosts will also be discussed. Recent developments and advances in travelers' diarrhea, immunizations, malaria medications, emerging infectious diseases and and navigating COVID will be highlighted.

Participants will have ample opportunity to interact with the faculty through interactive sessions and informal discussions.

Course Schedule

The Course is scheduled as follows: 08.00 to 17.15 on Friday, 3 February 2023, and 08.00 to 17.30 concluding on Saturday, 4 February 2023. The Course Agenda can be viewed here. This course will be hybrid in that some of the presentations will be live while others will be prerecorded. This entire course will be recorded and available online for 12 months.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the current epidemiology of common health risks affecting travellers
  • Choose which travellers should receive vaccines relevant for travel
  • Discuss the prevention and self-treatment of common travel-related illnesses such as travellers' diarrhea
  • Identify current malaria epidemiology and discuss chemoprophylaxis regimens
  • Advise travellers on the prevention of disease, including being able to advise pregnant women, paediatric travellers, immigrants, VFR travellers, diabetics, and immunocompromised hosts
  • Recognise illness in travellers returning from overseas travel

Registration fees are payable only in U.S. Dollars and payment must be made by VISA, MasterCard or American Express through the electronic registration program. All credit card payments will be charged in U.S. Dollars. Currency conversions will be handled through the credit card company's billing arrangement with the cardholder. If you are unable to use a credit card when submitting your registration, please contact the ISTM Secretariat at ISTM@ISTM.org to make alternate arrangements. ISTM members must log in to their member account to receive the member discount on registration fees.

Force Majeure

The ISTM reserves the right to cancel the course without notice or compensation in the case of an extraordinary event or circumstance beyond the control of the ISTM, such as a war, terrorist attacks, riot, crime or an event described as an "act of God" (e.g. earthquake, fire, flooding, breakout of disease, tornado). In such cases the ISTM is free of all responsibility because of such an incident. In the event of it being impossible for the course to take place due to force majeure cases, so long as it arises from a cause not attributable to the ISTM, the ISTM shall only be obliged to reimburse the payments received subject to the deduction of any costs it has incurred in preparation for the course. This liability only extends to payments made directly to the course and not to payments made by the delegates to hotels or airlines.

Certificate in Travel HealthTM Exam

The certificate recognises professionals who have demonstrated expertise in the unique body of knowledge associated with travel medicine care and consultation. Professionals passing the exam will be granted a Certificate in Travel HealthTM or CTH®. ISTM members who receive the certificate will be given special recognition on the ISTM website and in the "ISTM Global Travel Clinic Directory". The next examination will be offered May 2023.
